Step INTO NOSTALGIA WITH OUR ICONIC AIRSTREAMS

Born in the early days of highway travel, Airstream trailers quickly became the symbol of freedom on the open road; lightweight, durable, and instantly recognizable by their polished aluminum silhouette. By the 1970s, they were everywhere: parked beside surf breaks, tucked into forest campgrounds, and rolling toward the next adventure with a little bit of comfort in tow. They weren’t just trailers, they were a way of travelling: simple, stylish, and built to last.

At Mackenzie Beach Resort, we keep that spirit alive by lovingly restoring vintage 1970s Airstreams for a new generation of travellers. Each one is brought back with care and respect for its original character, those classic curves, cozy layouts, and retro charm, while being refreshed so it feels clean, comfortable, and easy to enjoy. The result is a stay that blends nostalgia with the kind of warmth and detail that makes you want to slow down, settle in, and make memories by the ocean.

* In certain situations airstreams can accommodate up to 4 people. If you have questions about this please call the front desk at 1-250-726-3439.

The Airstream Story

Before they became icons, they were a dream.

In 1931, a man named Wally Byam built a trailer in his backyard with one idea in mind: that travel should feel like freedom, not hardship. He riveted together aluminum panels into a shape that would eventually become one of the most recognized silhouettes in the world — the Airstream.

The design was deliberately borrowed from aviation. Byam studied streamlined aircraft fuselages and realized their form could do something remarkable on the road: cut wind resistance, shed weight, and outlast nearly anything else on four wheels. The result was a trailer so well-engineered that some of the earliest models are still in use today.

Through the Great Depression, World War II, the postwar boom, and the space age, the Airstream endured. NASA chose it to house returning Apollo astronauts during quarantine. The US State Department sent caravans of them across Africa and Europe as rolling embassies of American ingenuity. They showed up at Woodstock, at drive-ins, at the edges of national parks — wherever Americans went looking for something just beyond the horizon.

What made the Airstream different wasn't just the aluminum skin. It was the philosophy behind it: that the journey is as important as the destination, that shelter doesn't have to mean staying still, and that good design should hold up against the elements for generations.
